1Frendys, ȝe shal haue a solempne feste this weke of ii apostles, seynt Peter and seynt Poule, the whiche apostles as that day suffred martirdam for the loue of Cryste vnder the emperoure Nero, that was emperoure of Rome. For we redyn that day that the holy man Peter that was made prynce and ledyr of alle cristen apostles and was made portere of helle yates. And the thirde yere after the ascencioun of our Lord, he was made beshope of Antioche. And there he was vii yere and preched Goddes wordes. And after that he went him to Rome and there he was made pope of Rome. And was duellynge amonge hem xx wynterand vand preched
2/f. 59v/ Goddes worde to the peple and turned many peple to Cristen feith. And at the laste he was takyn with emperoure Nero and bete wele with scourges. And after feterd [him]1 and leyde in prisoun, and dede him on a crosse and hinge his feet vpward and his hed dounward, in dispyte of his Lord Ihesu that he preched offe. And right so this holy man Peter yelde up the goste to his Lord Ihesu. And after that Poule was ordeynde to be a techer of Cristes worde to the peple. And tho was he takyn for this prechinge and bounde faste with cordes. And so he was led to Rome to the emperoure prisoun Nero, and thereinne he lay ii yere in prisoun and certyn men to kepe him. And after it fel at the laste thei brout him out of prisoun ayen upon the same day ƿat seynt Peter was crucified to deth, seynt Poule was takyn and heded. And right thus theise ii men, holy apostles Peter and Poule, as that day ended out of this worlde, and after that thei were bothe born up to heuene with Crystes angels, thereinne to ben in ioye and blisse withoutyn ende for here prechinge and for her martirdam suffering. And now is Peter prynce of alle Cristes apostles, and he hath takyn him the keyes of heuene yates and Poule to be with him,
3/f. 60r/ for thei were so good fisshers here as Crist seyde to hem in holy writte: Venite post me faciam vos piscatores homines. And this is to seyn : ‘ Come ye after me’, seyde Criste, ‘for I shal make yow to ben fisshers of men’. And ƿat is to seyn to ben techers of men with your prechinge and conuerte hem to Cristen feith, and to turne hem from here fals feith. Moreouere, he tellith that there was a man that vsed wychecrafte and his name was Symon Magus. And he made him as he had ben a god, and made men beleue that he wolde fle up to heuene. And so at the laste he began to make his wichecrafte and he began to fle up to heuene ward. And seynt Peter was there present and sawe how that he began to fle vpward and he thowte to lette him of his purpose. And anon he kneled doun and lyfte up his hondes to God and preyed that he wolde vouchesaf to lettyn and for do his2 fleynge that he made with his sossery for to begyle the peple therewith. And that he haue no more myte nor strenkthe for to ascende heyer than he was. Tho anon Criste herde his preyere and graunte him that he asked. And anon in the sight of al the peple this wichecraft fel doun to grounde and al to braste his legges donward upon the herde roche. And after that, he had no more power for to flen nor to gon on his feet,
4/f. 60v/ for his wynges that he shulde haue flowen with were benomen him and his feet were take from him. And this mischief he had before al the peple and after descended doun to hell thereinne to duelle eueremore. And therefore cometh to chirche on that day in the worshipe of tho ii apostles, Peter and Poule, and pray to hem here devoutly so to beryn oure erande to almyty God, that we mow be foryeven of oure dedly trespass here, and after to come to that ioye ful of blisse there thei ben inne. Amen.
