1Frendys, seynt Barnabe, Crystes holy apostle, the whiche we redyn that thurgh the calling of the Holy Goste he was made Cristes holy apostle. And after he was chosyn for to be Poules felow to gon and prechen Goddes

And so after it fel that this apostle Barnabe was comyn to preche with seynt Poule into a cite that was cleped Conium,and there thei come to preche Goddes wordes to the peple. And in that cite, the boke seyth that oure Lord God, Goddes Sone of heuene, appered to Barnabe and seyde : ‘ƿu Barnabe’, seyde Cryste, ‘be ƿu euere stedfaste in the feith ƿat ƿu art inne and wete ƿu wele for sothe’, seyde he, ‘ƿu shalt suffre turmentrye and tribulacion for my name. But anoder is this’, seyde he, ‘ƿu shalt haue therefore euerelastynge mede in heuene’. And tho Barnabe seyde and answerd him ayen and seyde : ‘The wille of my Lord be it fulfilled here and in eche place’, seyde he. And tho anon Cryst vanished out of his sight. And reuelacioun was in the thirde yere of his passioun that he suffred for the loue of man. And after ƿat Barnabe1 confesthim to2 hisfelow of that reuelacioun of God, that he saw and herd before, and tolde him how it was. And anon he fel doun on his kneys to Poule and preyed that he wolde prey for him to his Lord God, that he myte ben acceptable to come into the sight of him, and he weped and made gret mone. And thanne Poule spak to him and had gret compassioun of him, that he made so gret lamentacioun, and seyde thus to him: ‘Broder, make ƿu not so mekyl dele for thi duellynge place
3/f. 57r/ is before the trone of almyty God’, seyde he, ‘and I am ordeynde now to gon to Ierusalem for to viset that holy place’. And right there thei toke here leue togedyre and eche of hem kyssed oder. And there thei departed at that tyme, and Barnabe went him to Cipre to shewe there Goddes wordes amonge the peple. And whanne he was comyn thedyre, he fonde there ii men of Cristes seruantes, and here names were called Symon and Ariston, and both were syke of the feueres. And anon Barnabe cam and sawe what thei were inne, and anon he seyde a gospel ouere hem. And whanne he had seyde, he toke up his honde and blessed hem and than thei resyn up and weryn al hole. And after that, Barnabe went him forth to preche Goddes wordes and folwed him whedyre sumeuere he went. And so it fel on a tyme that Barnabe stode up and preched to the peple for to conuerte hem to cristen feith. And the peple was wel agreued therewith that he shulde shewe amonge hem seche a beleue of his Lord God. And anon right thei pulde him doun there he stode and bonde his hondes and his feet, and after thei bete with scourges. And whanne thei had so don, thei went and made a gret fyre
4/f. 57v/ and toke this holy man Barnabe and set him evene in the myddes of the fyre. And thereinne he ended his martirdam and yelde up the goste to God. But natheles he besemed not brent nothinge of him in al the worlde, no more than he had come in no fyre; but thus he ended. Et cetera.
