1/f. 47v/ Frendys, ȝe shal haue a solempne feste of seynt Marke the euangeliste. And theise ben called the euangelistes: Marke, Mathew, Luke and Iohn. And wherefore ben thei called euangelistes ? Sothely for thei wryten the Holy Gospellys, the whiche bere witnesse of Goddes worde. And theise iiii dede preche it to the peple. And also thei dede preche of the carnacioun of Cryste, how that he had take flessh and blede withinne the uirgyn Mary. And also thei dede preche of his passioun, how that he dyed on the crosse for the loue of mankynde, and how on the thirde day he ros from deth to lyf and dede apperyn to hem and after dede duelle with hem xl dayes. And whanne it was his wille, he stey up to heuene. And alle theise thinges thei wretyn and bere witnesse thereof. And of many oder thinges thei dede preche, and bere witnesse of the carnacioun, that he was become man, and how he shewed to hem remissioun of here synnes, the whiche beleued perfitly in him. And after that he went him into Ethiopie, and so he cam him into a cite the whiche was cleped Alisaundre. And whanne he was comyn thedyire, he ordeynde anon a chirche and certyn mynesters thereinne. First he ordeynde a beshope and iii prestys and vii dekenes and ix clerkys, and theise, he ordeynde, there to for to redyn and1 syngen for al cristen soules. And there he himself wolde stonde up in the pulpitte and preche Goddes worde to the peple. And so with his prechinge he conuerted many men to christen feith. And so there was a teraunt of the londe and he herde seyn that there was seche a man that turned meche peple from her feith. And so upon a day he cam thedyre to h[i]m2, and also he bad him that he shulde leue his prechinge or ellys he wolde don him to leue it. And anon he seyde mornfully he wolde not leue his prechinge for no man. And whanne he had seyde so, anon he toke him and bonde him and led him into prisoun without mete or drynke. And whil he was in prisoun, Cryst sent him his angels to counforte him, and thei dede fede him with angels mete. And so at the last the3

And right as thei drewyn him forthe be the throte, al the cite [cam]4 into the felde and there thei wolde haue slayn him. And whil thei drewyn him thus, he lifte up his ien to God and seyde theise words: In manus tuas Domine, et cetera. ‘ƿu Lord God, I take my spiryte into thi hondes’. And whanne he had seyde theise words, [he]5 yelde up the gost to God almyty, and there Cristes angels were redy and beryn up his soule into heuene blysse, the whiche blisse he brynge us al to withoutyn ende.
