1/f. 41r/ Frendys, we fynde in our bokes that tyme that fals Herawde herde seyn that a childe was born that shulde be kynge of al the Iure and ouere alle the worlde and ouere all the londes of the Iure, he was aferde that he nor none of alle his generacioun shulde haue had no lordshepe but to haue gon to oder strange places. Anon thanne he ordeynde to done than alle the childre to deth that were born withinne ii yere. And so at the last there come into the emperoure londe iii kynges, and so thei come be the emperoure and thei tolde him that thei were in weye to se that childe that was born, the whiche childe shulde be kynge ouere alle kynges. And so the emperoure yaf hem leue to gon and to sekyn him, but he bad hem in al wey that whanne thei had founde him, that thei shulde come ayen to him and telle him where he is. And tho the kynges went hem forthe and so thei come into Bedlem. And there thei founde the Sauere of alle the worlde, and there thei dede gret reuerence to him. And whanne thei had thus don, thei were monyshed be Cristes angels that thei shulde not gon be the Herawde into here owne londe, but thei

And anon he ordeynde his knytes and bad hem gon into Bedlem, into al thecuntrethere abowte, and slen al the childre that thei myte fynde that were withinne ii yere of age. And thei dede so as he bad hem don. And tho anon cometh an angel to Ioseph, that was Mary husbonde, and bad that he shulde take the childe and his moder, and anon lede hem bothe into Egipte, and there to duelle til he sende worde for to come ayen. And than Ioseph toke hem bothe and led hem both into Egipte. And there thei were til Herawde knytes had slayn al that thei myte fynde, but Cryste thei cowdenot fynde for out that thei cowde don. And alle that the Herawde dede was because for to haue slayn him, that was born of the uirgyn Mary. Therefore he slewe alle innocentys, the whiche Holy Chirche makith mynde offe as ƿat day. And therefore I counsel yow preyen to alle marters, the whiche were marterd for Crystes sake, that thei wolde vouchesaf to preyen to here Lord God, so that
