1Frendys, we redyn of seynt Iohn, Cristes holy apostle, that was seynt Iames brodere, and we1 fynde that this holy man, after the passion of Cryste, he went him into a londe that was cleped Aȝie. And thereinne is viii citeis and in eche a cite he ordeyn[d]e2 a beshope to preche Goddes worde to the

And tho there was an emperoure in Rome – his name was Domicianus – and he herde seyn that this man Iohn had turned from his lawe. And there anon he sende a man to him and bad him gon out of his londe and neueremore to come thereinne. And so he exiled him out thereof and tho Iohn went him3 into anoder londe, the whiche was cleped Patmos, and thereinne he was and wrote the Apocalypes. And in the mene while the emperoure dyed and thenne he come home ageyn. And so whanne he was comyn into the londe, hit fel that there was a wemman4 dyed and here name was Drusiana. And so seynt Iohn herde seyn that seche a womman was ded. And he cam him thedyre anon. And whanne he was comyn, he saw there stonde ouerehere a gret multitude of men wepynge ouere the cors. And so at the laste thei seyde to Iohn: ‘Beholde ƿu, Iohn, Goddes apostle, how this womman that lyth here ded loued the eueremore wele. And how

And therefore seyde thei: ‘Iohn, if ƿu be Goddes apostle, reyse this woman to lyf that she may se the ones in sight’. And tho seyde this holy apostle: Deus meus IhesuChristus exitet te Drusiana de pedibus tuis reueste ad domum tuam et prepera michi refectione in domo tua.That is to seyn: ‘ƿu, womman Drusiana, my God Cryst of heuene shal reyse the ayen to lyf, and therefore ryse yu up now and go ƿu hom to thi hous. And ordeynde me sumwhat that I mow ete of’. And whanne he had seyde theise wordes, she rose up on here feet right as the apostle commaunde here, right as she had resyn up from slepe. And tho al the peple toke up a cry alle at ones and seyde theise wordes: Vnus est Deus qui predicatIohannes, vnus et verus Deus Ihesu Christus. And this is to seyn : ‘There is on God that Iohn precheth of’, seyde thei, ‘and that is our God Ihesu Cryste’. This myracle and many mo Cryst shewed for the loue of seynt Iohn. And so after this he leued many yeres. And in the xvii yere he dyed, after the passioun of Cryste, upon a Sonday. Whanne masse was don, he went himself to his graue and right there he yelde up the goste to God. Et cetera
