1/f. 38v/ Frendys, we redyn that he was the firste man of the Newe Lawe that toke martirdam for the loue of Cryste. For we redyn that what tyme Cryst was ascended up to heuene, he went him anon to Iherusalem and repreued the wykked Iues for that thei dede to God, and blamed hem foule for here falshed and for fals beleue that thei were inne. And whanne [he] had thus repreued
2/f. 39r/ hem, anon thei stode ayens hym and grenned on him as thei had ben houndes. And tho seynt Steuene seyde theise words: Ecce uideo celos et apertos et Ihesum stantem a dextris Dei. And ƿat is to say: ‘Behelde’, he seyde, ‘how that I se heuenes opened and Ihesu thereinne, stondynge on the right honde of God.’ And whanne the Iues herde him sey theise words, anon thei stopped here erys with here hondes for thei wolde no more here thereof. And anon thei toke this holy man Steuene and dede lede him anon without the cite, and thei toke and caste stones at him. And there thei stoned him to the deth. And yit, or he dyed, he yelde up the gost to God. And this holy man Steuene seyde theise wordes : Domine, ne statuas illis hoc peccatum,quia nesciunt quid faciunt. And this is to seyn: ‘ƿu lord God,’ he seyde, ‘ordeyne ƿu not this thinge that thei don to me be synne to hem for thei knowe not what thei don.’ And whanne he had seyde theise wordes, he gaf up the goste to God almyty. After we fynde that God shewed many myracles for his loue. First we redyn that on the same place that he suffred his martirdam, thei dede ordeyne a chirche in the worshipe of him. And so it fel as thei led stones in carres toward the chirche werke, there sat a yonge childe in the

And so thei that dreue the carres toke non hede to the carres afore hem, and the childe sat there thei shulde comen, and so the to whele toke the childe and went evene ouere it and slewe the childe. And tho the childes moder was there ny. And so she come rennynge to her childe and toke it up and it was ded. And tho this womman dede here to the church with here childe dede in here armes. And whanne she come there, she seyde thus: ‘Helpe now Steuene for Goddes loue, that my childe, the wiche is slayn in this werke, that it mow haue lif ayene.’ And whanne she had seyde theise wordes, thurgh the grace of God and of seynt Steuene, that holy martyre, the childe queked ageyn and turned to lyf and fared right wele after. This miracle and many mo Criste shewed for the loue of Seynt Steuene, et cetera.
